How is steel weight calculated?
The weight of a material is its volume (cross-section area × length) multiplied by its density. Steel is taken as 7.85 g/cm³ and stainless steel as 7.93 g/cm³. Dimensions are in millimetres (mm) and the result is in kilograms (kg).
- Round: kg = Diameter² × 0.7854 × Length × 7.85 / 1,000,000
- Square: kg = Side² × Length × 7.85 / 1,000,000
- Flat / Sheet: kg = Width × Thickness × Length × 7.85 / 1,000,000
- Hexagon: kg = Across flats² × 0.866 × Length × 7.85 / 1,000,000
- Tube: kg = (Outer diameter − Wall) × Wall × 3.1416 × Length × 7.85 / 1,000,000
Accurate weights make shipment planning, vehicle loading and cost calculation much easier.
